Wildlife Economy Working Group

The Wildlife Economy Working Group (WEWG) – convened by the African Wildlife Foundation and the African Leadership University’s School of Wildlife Conservation – is an open learning partnership of stakeholders across the African continent concerned with biodiversity conservation and sustainable use. The WEWG seeks to increase cooperation to create an enabling environment for a thriving Wildlife Economy at local, national, and international scales in Africa.

As a leading institution driving and promoting wildlife economies in Africa, AWEI has joined the partnership to support its objectives and to participate in its activities..

The objectives for the WEWG are to:

  • Deepen our understanding of the status of, and options for, the African wildlife economy;
  • Create a forum to discuss policy frameworks to enable the successful development of the wildlife economy;
  • Incorporate the wildlife economy into existing development and conservation initiatives and activities;
  • Identify and collaborate on projects that further the sustainable development of the wildlife economy;
  • Increase engagement with outside stakeholders to enhance the uptake of wildlife economy activities in Africa; and
  • Advise and work with other organizations on cross-cutting matters relating to the African wildlife economy.
