Faculty: AgriSciences
Department or Division: Animal Sciences and the African Wildlife Economy Institute
Advert title:
Postdoctoral Research Opportunity: Analysis of wildlife economy opportunities, barriers, and recommendations for the scaling up of game meat value chains across Africa
Context:
The Department of Animal Sciences undertakes training and research on production aspects of domesticated and non-domesticated (wildlife) species. The African Wildlife Economy Institute – in partnership with Oppenheimer Generations Research and Conservation – undertakes training and research on enabling wildlife economies to transform landscapes in Africa to conserve nature, build climate resilience, generate inclusive economic opportunities, and enhance community wellbeing.
The objective of this research is to understand the potential within global value chains for wildlife meat – both wild-harvested and ranched. This includes assessing the current and potential demand for wild meat; the current and potential supply of wild meat; the enabling environment for the wild meat sector at national, regional, continental, and international levels; and opportunities for enhancing sustainability outcomes across the value chain.
An appointment will be made for not less than twelve months and not more than two years. The second year is subject to performance and availability of funds. The postdoctoral bursary is R 200 000 per annum which is tax-free. There are no additional benefits since postdoctoral fellows are not appointed as employees.
Duties:
As a postdoctoral fellow, the incumbent will work with researchers in the Department and the Institute and with wider project collaborators. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to conduct transdisciplinary research within the above-mentioned research project, coordinating expert inputs from diverse disciplines, publish at least two full- length, peer-reviewed journal articles per year, and coordinate and manage inputs from and supervise postgraduate students. Prof Kennedy Dzama and Prof Francis Vorhies will be the academic supervisors at Stellenbosch University who will work with the incumbent on the specific research questions for the project.
Job requirements:
- A PhD within the last 5 years from a recognised university in an appropriate field of study (AgriSciences, Conservation, Business, or Environmental Management)
- Published transdisciplinary research in areas relevant to the wildlife economy, especially in relation to governance
- Experience in conducting research at an advanced level in a multi-and interdisciplinary environment
Recommendations:
