This report presents the status of blue carbon habitats in the understudied Western Indian Ocean. The report provides new data from a comprehensive assessment of blue carbon stocks from coastal habitats (mangroves and seagrass meadows) within and outside existing protected areas of Tanzania and southern Mozambique. Hotspot areas of coastal blue carbon sequestration and storage were primarily identified in areas of large, continuous and relatively sheltered mangroves and seagrass meadows.
