Associate Professor James Burford
Postgraduate Supervision Conference Key SpeakerJames Burford PhD is a researcher of international higher education, who has worked at universities in New Zealand, Thailand, Australia and the UK. James is an Associate Professor in the Department of Education Studies at the University of Warwick, where he leads an MA programme in Global Education and International Development and co-founded the Doctoral Education and Academia Research (DEAR) Centre. James’ research focuses on the micropolitics of doctoral education and the academic profession.
His recent projects have focused on distance doctoral education, research centre leadership, inequalities in doctoral admissions, reasonable adjustments and mitigation in doctoral education, and pathways for racially minoritised researchers in the UK. James has served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Studies in Graduate and Postdoctoral Education since 2023. His recent co-authored books include Doing Doctoral Research at a Distance: Flourishing in Off-Campus, Hybrid, and Remote Pathways (2024) and Making Sense of Academic Conferences: Presenting, Participating and Organising (2023). James contributes to the Conference Inference Blog, all about academic conferences.
