Currently the average unemployment rate in Sub-Saharan Africa is around 30%, and between 2010 and 2040, an additional 712 million youth are estimated to enter the job market in the region. Of these new entrants, it is likely that less than half will have completed secondary school and no more than 10% will have completed any form of tertiary qualification. At the same time the food system is responsible for at least 60% of all livelihoods in the region.
The research has two strands:
- Firstly, it aims to explore youth perspectives on their future, focusing on employment opportunities within the food system using a narrative based approach.
- Secondly, using a network mapping approach, it aims to investigate and shed understanding on the ways in which new competency networks evolve within emerging sustainability niches, specifically within the food system.
