Join us for a discussion hosted by Mark Swilling on Chapter 3: Understanding our Finite World: Resource Flows of Late Modernity, the fourth of the webinar series based on Prof Mark Swilling’s new book The Age of Sustainability: Just Transitions in a Complex World on 26 May 2021 at 4pm SAST.
Chapter 3 analytically reviews the contribution made by the International Resource Panel (IRP) to our understanding of the dynamics of the deep transition. The IRP can be understood as a collaborative effort by a diverse group of researchers to document the socio-metabolic case for why the industrial epoch has effectively reached the end of its 250-year historical cycle.
The original objectives of the IRP were to: (1) provide independent, coherent and authoritative scientific assessments of policy relevance on the sustainable use of natural resources and their environmental impacts over the full life cycle; (2) contribute to a better understanding of how to decouple economic growth rates from the rate of resource use and environmental degradation.
