Researcher

Profile

Dr Nyasha Magadzire is a researcher with a strong interest in understanding how food systems have evolved over time and how society can pivot towards more just, resilient, and sustainable food systems. Her research focuses on identifying and assessing innovations and/or initiatives (referred to as “seeds”) that could potentially contribute to the development of more sustainable food systems in Africa. Nyasha serves as the ethics coordinator for the CST and also teaches the Food Systems module in the CSTs PGDip in Sustainable Development programme.

Prior to joining the CST, Nyasha was involved in exploring urban food system dynamics in Worcester, South Africa, as a postdoc with Vrije University and the Centre of Excellence in the Food Security at the University of Western Cape. Nyasha has a background in mapping land use and vegetation cover changes, fire ecology, and modelling vegetation distributions in the Savanna and Mediterranean biomes. She looks forward to opportunities where she can continue to contribute her expertise to food systems research, while also linking that work to her interest in indigenous knowledge systems and conservation.
