Prof. Andrew Boraine
Profile
Prof. Andrew Boraine is an independent partnering and systems change practitioner. He has been involved in South Africa’s political, local government, urban, economic, and sustainability change processes for the past four decades, as student leader, anti-apartheid activist, negotiator, government planner, city manager, chief executive, partnering specialist, place-maker, institutional designer, and communicator.
He conceptualised and managed three collaborative intermediary organisations over a 25-year period – the South African Cities Network (SACN), Cape Town Partnership (CTP), and Western Cape Economic Development Partnership (EDP). He has hands-on experience of over 100 multi-stakeholder partnering processes, covering a wide range of issues and sectors, including water, waste, energy, just transition, mobility and transport, inclusionary housing, food and nutrition, public safety and violence reduction, agriculture and rural development, economic development, youth unemployment, homelessness, urban management, place making, open data, regenerative built environment, conservation, social inclusion, and many more.
Andrew currently works with a range of local and global partners in government, civil society, community, business, and research and knowledge institutions. Andrew is Adjunct Professor with the African Centre for Cities (ACC) at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and a Research Fellow with the Centre for Sustainability Transitions (CST), Stellenbosch University.
