  • CST students participate in the first Resilience Alliance Short Course

    The first Resilience Alliance short course was held online from 24-28 May 2021. The course was organised in collaboration between the Resilience Alliance, a research organisation focussed on resilience in social-ecological systems as a basis for sustainability, and NSERC ResNet, a network for monitoring, modelling, and managing Canadian ecosystem services for sustainability and resilience.

  • Recreational hunting, conservation and livelihoods: no clear evidence trail

    In sub-Saharan Africa, almost 1,400,000 km² of land spread across many countries — from Kenya to South Africa — is dedicated to “trophy” (recreational) hunting. Debates centred on the role of recreational hunting in supporting nature conservation and local people’s livelihoods are among the most polarising in conservation today.

    We need visions of nature-futures as imagined by the youth (aged 18-30yrs), who will be the stewards of our planet in decades to come. And importantly, we need more visions of the future that are inspired by the lives and experiences of youth from the Global South.

  • Recreational hunting’s conservation paradox

    In a new article published in the journal One Earth, scientists from the University of Helsinki in Finland, Flinders University in Australia and Stellenbosch University in South Africa have reviewed more than 1,000 studies on recreational hunting. This is the first attempt to summarize the scientific literature examining the biodiversity and social effects of recreational hunting globally.
