It is with great sadness that we would like to say farewell to a true Helderberg legend, Dr. Gerhardus ‘Rooies’ Nieuwoudt van Wyk, who unfortunately passed away on Wednesday, 30 November. Dr. van Wyk passed away at the age of 77.

Dr. van Wyk was well known as a WP rugby player, having played flank for the WP from 1964 to 1968. Dr. van Wyk also served as chairman of Maties rugby, where he was honored with a lifetime membership for his contributions.

Dr. Rooies van Wyk played an active role in the development of Helderberg, with Dr. van Wyk being one of the founding members of the OHB (Oud-Helderbergbond) on Friday, the 16th of May, 2003. Furthermore, Dr. van Wyk has recently funded the renovation of the Helderberg squash courts.

The passing of Dr. van Wyk has left an immense void. Our condolences goes out to Dr. van Wyk’s family and friends.

We thank Dr. Rooies van Wyk for all his contributions to the House and for steering Helderberg in the right direction. His presence will be missed!
