Excitement about high standard of players at Maties Hockey

The Steinhoff Maties Hockey Club recently announced the squads for the 2015 season and in both the men and women’s group the standard of players in higher than in previous years.

It’s a very big year for especially the women’s first team having to defend the USSA, Varsity Hockey and Western Province Grand Challenge titles. First team coach Jenny King has a big group of players to work with seeing that all her players can play in the league and Varsity Hockey like national player, Illse Davids. “The standard of school players increases every year, I expect from the current selected players that we will be able to repeat the team performance results of the club last year,” said King.

The men’s team won the WP Grand Challenge last year, but coach Neville Rothman wants his team to also perform at the USSA tournament this season. Last year Maties finished a disappointing fifth place. The depth and standard of the men’s squad is very good this year with the biggest intake of national u.18/19 players at the club since 2005.

For Rothman the one of the biggest challenges of the coming season is going to be consistency. “We need to make massive improvements on the technical areas and the consistency of our week-to-week performances. We must show a thirst for being better than before without any complacency creeping in!”

Jeanne Davin

Jean Davin

Jean Davin

We at Steinhoff Maties Hockey send our condolences to the whole Davin family.

Article from Sports Fire Daily – Graeme Joffe

I was deeply saddened to hear about the tragic passing of Jeanne Davin who lost her life in a road accident in Namibia this past weekend.

It was back in 2007 that I was asked by good friend, Mark Barnard to MC a charity dinner in Windhoek for the launch of the Janine and Suzelle Davin Trust.

The trust was set up by their parents, Herman and Jeanne in memory of their two beautiful daughters, to allow other Namibians to follow their sporting dreams.

The two young sports stars themselves were killed in a tragic car accident in Namibia towards the end of 2006 in the prime of their lives.

Former Bok coach, Jake White, Schalk Burger Snr, Jean Engelbrecht and Namibians from all walks of life were among the hundreds of guests that attended the launch of the Trust.

I will never forget Herman and Jeanne on the night of the dinner and how the tears just flowed.

The pain was unbearable and we all cried with them.

Such wonderful people and now Herman’s loving wife is gone.

Jerrica Cormack @jerrijam9: Sad day for Namibian Hockey* Rest Peacefully Jeanne! You will be missed coach.. Thank you ❤️

Mark Barnard @trambowil: So sad, so many questions, no answers #liveinpeace #love #RIP Jeanne

So much grief for one family that has been torn apart.

Herman, all I can say is we are all grieving with you again my brother.

Words cannot express my heartfelt condolences.

I wish I could be there just to give you a big hug but I know Mark and company will do it for me.

You are all in my thoughts.

About the Davin Trust (http://davin-trust.org/)

The Trust was started in honor of Janine and Suzelle Davin.

Both were excellent sportswoman, who lived life to the fullest. The late Janine and Suzelle were very young role models not only for the youth, their achievements impressed people from all walks of life, especially the Namibian sporting community and those in the academic field.

The parents had the desire to start something positive after the tragedy and this ultimately culminated in the formation of this trust.
Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture:

‘”Janine and Suzelle brought energy, charisma, passion and talent to Namibian Hockey and Tennis and will be deeply missed by their fellow athletes, coaches and the Namibian Sporting community at large. Their sudden departure is a massive loss to the Namibian Sporting Family. Suzelle and Janine’s legacy will and must continue to inspire young Namibian athletes to follow their dreams of achieving excellence in sport.” – Message of condolences – John Motorwa – Minister (14 December 2006)

Max Caldas: Rugbymal hokkie-afrigter

Max Caldas

Max Caldas

Hoekom so lief vir Stellenbosch?

Die personeel by SAS kyk so goed na professionele sportmense.

“Ek is baie tevrede.

Nie mans of vroue.

Ek was mal daaroor.

Albei junior hokkiekapteine by Maties

Bleeker, Ntuli, Rob McKinley, Alex Stewart, Garth Turner, Jonathan Cloete, Chris Hawkridge, Ross Talmage, Gareth Simmonds en Reece Arendse is almal as eerste jaar by die Universiteit Stellenbosch geregistreer.
