Digital Donor Newsletter | Autumn 2019

To date, over R1 million in donations and goods have been raised and R500 000 worth of non-perishable items have been distributed to students in need since September last year via our Centre for Student Counselling and Development.

Stellenbosch University Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Wim de Villiers, has actively supported and raised funds for this campaign. In March this year, Prof De Villiers and a team of 27 alumni, staff and friends of the University, took on the Cape Town Cycle Tour, the world's largest timed cycle race, to raise money for #Move4Food. It was the third time that De Villiers was sweating for a good cause. In March 2018 he also tackled the Cape Town Cycle Tour to commemorate the University's Centenary and raise money for student bursaries and in September last year he ran the full 42,2km Sanlam Cape Town to once again raise money for #Move4Food.

Among the Maties team who were riding the Cycle Tour this year were students from the Tygerberg Medical Campus who last year cycled all the way from Vioolsdrift on the Namibian border to Cape Agulhas in support of #Move4Food – a distance of 902 km. The group – consisting of Breda Reed, Mias Marais, Luke Titus, Christoff Greyling and Wonderboy Nkosi – managed to raise over R59 000. You can still support them by donating here: https://www.givengain.com/a/hippocampusfund/.

According to Candice Egan, Development Officer within the DAR Division, there are a number of fundraising events planned for the rest of 2019. "Earlier this year, students and Lift Nutrition teamed up to host a successful Fitness Fest at Coetzenburg in aid of the #Move4Food campaign. Then, moving on to later this year, we will once again have a strong presence at the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon.

“I encourage staff, alumni, students and friends of the University, to enter and do their bit for #Move4Food. You can run with a charity entry for either the 10km peace run or the full marathon and become a campaign champion via GivenGain," she added.

De Villiers said: “A recent study by the National Research Foundation revealed that more than 30% of university students in South Africa are food insecure. This affects not only their academic results, but their fundamental human dignity. The #Move4Food initiative has my full support. I would greatly appreciate yours."
