Digital Donor Newsletter | Issue 2 | Summer 2018

On 14 February 2018, the stepping down of a president whose time was up signalled a new political dawn for South Africa. This change was brought about by courageous leadership on the part of various people.

Courageous leadership is also exactly what Mandy Rossouw, an alumna of Stellenbosch University, exhibited when she uncovered the Nkandla saga in 2009 – a significant exposé that started the long process that culminated in the recall of former President Jacob Zuma by the National Executive Committee of the ANC.

Five years after Mandy’s tragic passing due to an aortic aneurism, the country seems set on a new course. We need to encourage other courageous voices who, like Mandy, will champion truth and justice.

In honour of her memory and remarkable work, the Mandy Rossouw Bursary Fund was established in 2013. The Fund aims to support students with an interest in politics to complete a one-year honours degree in journalism at SU. Two recipients of the award have thus far completed their studies successfully, and both of them are already growing their journalism careers.

As SU’s Department of Journalism celebrates its fortieth anniversary and SU commemorates its centenary, we need your help to continue to inspire future journalists to ‘walk in Mandy’s shoes’. If you have an interest in current affairs – and an appreciation of the hard work done by journalists to ensure a free and fair society – then your contribution to the Mandy Rossouw Bursary Fund will be a meaningful investment in the future of our country.
