Stellenbosch University is turning 100 next year!

While a lot has changed since the University’s founding in 1918, the belief that universities still matter remains unchanged. This old university has come a long way and like any large public institution anywhere in the world, ours has not been an uneventful journey.

Our centenary provides an opportunity for each generation to a place to grasp on — and transform — its heritage.

Universities need their alumni and friends more than ever – that’s the case internationally, and also in South Africa, including at Maties. We find ourselves facing challenging times in higher education, which is why we’re launching the new Stellenbosch University Annual Fund. We aim to raise unrestricted funds from alumni, parents, staff and friends of the University to support projects which contribute to the areas of the greatest student need that would otherwise not receive funding, such as top up funding for bursaries so that students can proceed to the next level of their studies.

The Annual Fund seeks support each and every year from both existing and new donors. One of the main reasons to give to the SU Annual Fund is that it will help SU to end poverty. Our current graduate employment rate is 96%. One working class graduate changes an entire family's future.
Recent graduate research indicates that:

  • graduates enjoy higher quality jobs than non-graduates;
  • graduates enjoy better health outcomes, by being less likely to smoke, more likely to exercise, and less prone to depression;
  • graduates’ children also benefit from the educational success of their parents: graduates tend to have a greater involvement with their child’s education;
  • graduates are more influential in the community, by being active citizens who are more likely to vote and participate in voluntary activities;
  • graduates show positive attitudes towards diversity and equal opportunities, such as on race and gender equality issues; and
  • graduates, with their higher levels of skill, are a source of wider innovation and economic growth.

Our main objective with the SU Annual Fund is to ensure that there are funds available to allow us to respond quickly and appropriately to the areas of greatest student need. Your donations make a significant and immediate impact upon the quality of the SU experience for our students.
