The CGA team would like to officially welcome Camilla de Kock as our newest intern. She’s in town for two months, but can usually be found working as a GIS intern at the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality.
Choosing to spend time at the CGA became her goal when she realised that she will gain hands-on experience in remote sensing. She has been keeping busy with orchard digitisation, but is finding advanced earth observation to be her greatest interest. Before returning to Buffalo City, she would like to be able to independently analyse and interpret data from satellite imagery. Exploring how remote sensing can be used in different fields is also on her wish list. When back, she would like to further emphasise the importance of GIS by transferring her new found skills to a project that can be useful to the municipality.
Other than working, Camilla has been enjoying the very laid-back atmosphere Stellenbosch brings. “Stellenbosch is a charming little town filled with historical buildings and beautiful mountainous views…[W]alking here is always an adventure in itself.” And it seems like a bond has been formed between colleagues. “I will miss the people here, for sure! The helpful nature of the CGA staff and the way they received me as one of their own [is something I will remember]…I sure do hope our paths cross again sometime in the near future.”
We would like to thank Camilla for being such a keen learner. This makes her gratefulness for the opportunity clear. Camilla would like to thank the ISDG program, the BCMM team, Ms Lotsha, Ms Gunguta (her supervisor), and also Mr Given Nqoto (her mentor), who made this internship a part of her career journey.
