Maties’ Bell a standout player in Summer Series

In only his second international series Steinhoff Maties Hockey’s Daniel Bell showed his intent to become a regular member of the South African Men’s hockey team

Bell, Dylan Swanepoel, Pierre de Voux, Jacques le Roux, Shannon Boucher, Keenan Horne and Marc Fourie – all Maties – played for the SA team in the Summer Series matches against Netherlands and Ireland. SA lost against the Dutch, played to a draw against the Irish in the first game and then lost a thriller 4-5 in the last Irish match.

Earlier in January Bell along with Fourie, Boucher and Horne made their debut for South Africa in a series against Austria. “It was such an honour for me to play for my country. I will never forget my first time lining up for the national anthem. Standing there I realised that I have made it. I enjoyed the whole experience so much. After my first match I came off the field with such a big smile…I just knew I was where I wanted to be,” said Bell.

Bell was one of the best players on the field against the Dutch and Irish. “I have to keep on working hard. If you play for your country you can never settle for being average. I want to be the best. I am happy with my form and my game in this series, but I know there is always room for improvement. I am moving forward, but I know I am capable of so much more!”

Bell added that playing with his club mates made the whole experience even more memorable. “Taking the field with my Maties teammates was something special. During the years we developed a special bond and to play together for our country was special.”

South Africa will play next in a series against Germany.

Vida Ryan a Maties Sport success story

Born and raised in the Karoo town of Beaufort West Vida Ryan came to Stellenbosch in 2003 and in the past decade she turned into one of the biggest success stories of Maties Sport High Performance.

Vida excelled in sport at a young age and earned her provincial colours in various sporting codes including hockey, athletics and soccer. Vida started playing hockey for Maties and made her international debut for South Africa in 2007 and was part of the SA team to participate in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Playing hockey for Maties, Western Province and South Africa was almost a full time job in it self, but Vida has since a young age rise above expectations. She has been studying since 2003 and has not stopped learning. She has earned her BA degree in Sport Science (Majoring in Psychology) and also did her Hons in Sport Science specializing in Pediatrics. She has also received the following:  Post Graduate Certificate in Education, a BPhil in Logistics & Transport Studies and a Hons Educational Support.

“I am currently working as an Administrator at NSF Africa. My main duties include planning arrangements to ensure various types of food safety audits are scheduled according to clients’ needs. This process involves managing the diaries of a number of auditors who are based across South Africa and Kenya,” said Vida.

The NSF Africa office forms part of NSF International, servicing clients in South Africa and across sub-Saharan Africa. NSF International’s focus is on the development of public health standards and certification programs that help protect the world’s food, water, consumer products and environment. Our division acts as an accredited Certification Body, offering third party audits and certification against a variety of internationally recognized Good Agricultural Practices and Food Safety Management Systems in the agricultural, beverages and food processing sectors.

It is pretty obvious that Vida does not only like the Chanda Kaushik quote, she also lives it. “I want to inspire people. I want someone to look at me and say: “Because of you I didn’t give up.”

Matie-players for SA

imageEnglish: No less than 12 players from Steinhoff Maties Hockey have been chosen to play for South Africa in international practice matches.

Various international teams are currently in South Africa for training camps. The Dutch, Irish, Belgium and Chile will play a series of matches at Hartleyvale and Stellenbosch. The Dutch men’s team is staying at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport and will play three matches at the Maties astro against Ireland and Belgium.

The South African women’s team will be playing against Belgium and Chile. The Maties in the squad are Hanli Hattingh, Illse Davids, Erin Hunter, Quanita Bobbs and Jade Mayne. The SA men will come up against the Netherlands, Ierland and Belgium. Jacques le Roux, Daniel Bell, Dylan Swanepoel, Marc Fourie, Pierre de Voux, Shannon Boucher and Keenan Horne will present Maties.

Early in January Bell, Boucher, Horne and Fourie made their debut for South Africa in the series in Austria played in Durban. “It was a phenomenal experience walking onto the field for my first International cap against Austria. I constantly had to pinch myself to make sure that it was real,” said Boucher.

“Singing the South African National anthem was rather overwhelming and emotional, at that point I realised that all my hard work and sacrifice had finally paid off. The Lord had answered the desires of my heart. Scoring my first international goal was also a special occasion. Having performed well at the Durban Series I have been given the opportunity to continue learning, and living my dream of playing for South Africa. I look forward to a hard 10 days on the field, with a few more goal celebrations.”

Swanepoel played last for SA at the World Cup. “I’m really excited to be back in the team after a six month break where I focused on my studies. It’s going to be really awesome to be playing for my country again especially in front of a home crowd in Cape Town with my friends and family there. I think the series is going to be really tough. We are playing against well-prepared opposition. Having said that, we welcome the competition with open arms and we are here to compete and keep learning and growing as a national squad.”

The Dutch played in the final of the World Cup last year.

Schedule at Maties Astro: Monday, 26 January @ 15:00 – Netherlands v Belgium; Wednesday, 28 January @ 15:00 – Netherlands v Ireland; Thursday, 29 January @ 18:00 Netherlands v Ierland.

Ek was baie emosioneel. Dit was toe dat ek besef het, dat al my harde werk en opofferinge die moeitewerd was. God het my hartsbegeertes beantwoord.
