The annual AGM was held on Wednesday 1 October.  Congratulations to all the prize winners.  Here are some of them.

• Steinhoff Maties mans- en vrouehokkiespanne wen beide vir die tweede agtereenvolgende jaar die WP Grootuitdaagtitel terwyl die Vics vroue tweede geëindig het;
• Die Matie vrouehokkiespan het vanjaar die WP Grootuitdaagtitel vir die 30ste keer sedert 1973 verower;
• Die Mans WP Skiereilandspan (WP B-span) met 5 Maties en 2 Oud Maties in die span, wen die goue medalje by die Interprovinsiale Toernooi nadat hul Suid Gauteng 2-1 geklop het.  Raaghib Fredericks (MB,ChB 2013) was die kaptein van die span wat die geskiedkundige oorwinning behaal het.
• Die Mans WP Span (4 Maties & 4 Oud Maties) wen die bronsmedalje.  Skiereiland het vir die groot verrassing gesorg toe hul die WP in die semi-finaal met 2-1 geklop en sodoende vir die finaal gekwalifiseer het;
• Pierre de Voux (M.Ing), WP kaptein, word aangewys as die Top Doelskieter van die toernooi;
• Keenan Horne (4e jaar BComm Regte) word aangewys as die Mees Belowende Speler;
• Die volgende Matie spelers is ook in die SA Hokkie Oefengroep ingesluit: Jacques le Roux (BA Sportwetenskap 2008), Daniel Bell (2e  jaar BCom Bestuurswetenskappe),  Marc Fourie (4e jaar BCom Aktuariële Wetenskappe)

Like their men counterparts the Steinhoff Maties Women’s hockey team defended the Western Province Grand Challenge title with success.

On Saturday the league came to an end for Maties with a 4-0 victory over WPCC. This result not only confirmed the title for Maties, but also secured second place in the Grand Challenge for Vics. It is only the second time that this has happened.

For Maties captain Hanli Hattingh it was a big season with a lot of pressure and big expectations. Winning the Grand Challenge was one of the biggest goals for Hattingh and her team. “I think even though the Grand Challenge doesn’t get as much coverage as SASSU or Varsity Hockey because it runs over a much longer time span it is still the primary focus of the team to win the league, because it proves that the team can not only compete against over universities but also, all the over local clubs, with players that has even more experience. Therefore I think it is still very important to win grand challenge.”

This was the 30^th time Maties won the Grand Challenge. “I think it was expected of Maties to win the Grand Challenge again because of our previous record winning it many times before and also the amount of training we put in comparing to other teams in the league it is expected that we perform well.”

On Saturday the team also had to say good bye to some of the legends in the team. They included Farah Fredericks and Leigh Boardman who played at the Maties hockey club for the past 10 years. It was also Hattingh’s last game for Maties.

For the second year in a row the Steinhoff Maties Hockey Club of the Stellenbosch University has won both the men and women’s Western Province Grand Challenge League.

For the men it was a highlight of a season that had its ups and downs, while the women got the treble of titles – USSA, Intervarsity and Grand Challenge – they were looking for.

It was coach Neville Rothman’s first season in charge of the senior men’s team. Steinhoff Maties managed a place in the final of the Varsity Hockey but lost against USSA champions UJ. “Even though we were part of the Varsity Hockey tournament we regarded the league (Grand Challenge) as our highest priority. So to defend our title – in the way we did – is a massive achievement for everyone involved. You can never expect to win the Grand Challenge as it’s a tough competition with many good teams. The expectation set by ourselves and the University is to win the league so there is some pressure but the players relish this challenge,” said Rothman.

Not only did Rothman lose some players to national duty he also had to make work with injuries to key players like striker Shannon Boucher. “Careful planning from the beginning allowed us to work with an extended squad during these times but you can never really plan for injuries and this is where I need to compliment the players as many of them had to play for longer periods during matches as our squad towards the end was rather depleted.”

Steinhoff Maties men ended the season on Saturday with a 4-4 draw against WPCC. “The entire season has been the highlight as we have remained unbeaten.”

Steinhoff Maties women have always been a powerhouse of student hockey. For coach Jenny King winning the Grand Challenge is always a goal. “I won’t say we expected to win the league, but we do put everything in to ensure we do secure the title. There is always pressure when you play for a Steinhoff Maties team. Everybody always wants to beat us, which is great as it drives us to keep improving. Losing players to injury and national duty was part of our planning and we were prepared. We always train with a squad of 20 so as to keep the continuity in the game and team performance.”

The treble were all part of the planning for King and her team. “Our focus now shifts to the 2015 Varsity Hockey.” Steinhoff Maties women are the defending champions. What is most pleasing for King is the fact that the Vics women team are currently lying second on the log. “It proves the depth of our high performance programs, players and coaches.”

Maties Hockey Club is still dominating the Western Province Grand Challenge. Both the men’s and women’s teams are the defending champions and currently in the lead this season.

Over the weekend Steinhoff Maties won their matches against Pinelands after also beating Vics on Thursday.

Steinhoff Maties men have played and won nine matches and is in the lead with 27 points. Fish Hoek is second with 18 points. On Thursday Maties won the match against Vics at Coetzenburg with 6-0. Dave Agar (2), Keenan Horne, Rob Edwards, Dylan Swanepoel and James Drummond scored the goals. Against Pinelands Cameron Corney, Dave Agar, Keenan Horne, Matt de Sousa and Brad Logan had the scoreboard ticking in the 6-0 victory. Maties will next play UCT on Wednesday.

The women’s team also got two victories from two matches when they got the better of Vics (2-0) and Pinelands (2-0). Tarryn Glasby and Sherry King scored against Vics, while King and Suleke Brand got goals against Pinelands. Maties (27) have won nine of ten matches and lead WPCC (16) in the standings. Vics are currently third with 15 points. Maties next game is Saturday against Somerset West at Hartleyvale. Vics are up against Central also at Hartleyvale.

Steinhoff Maties women’s hockey team are once again the South African Student Champions after winning last week’s USSA tournament in Pretoria. Maties finished second the past two years. It is Maties’ 17^th USSA title.

This year they beat Pukkie in the final after a penalty shoot-out. Going into the final Pukke were the favourites because they got the better of Maties in the group matches by winning 3-1. In the final though the match ended 1-1. The one on one penalty shoot-out then decided the winner. Tarryn Glasby was the goal scorer in the match and then Glasby, Cath Morris and Heather MacEwan scored in the shout-out.

In the earlier group matches Maties beat NMMU (4-1), UCT (4-0) and then in the semi-final got the better of UJ (1-0).

It was not the best tournament for the men’s team though. University of Johannesburg defended its title successfully. Maties finished fifth after losing out on the semi-finals to KZN and NMMU due to goal difference. They finished 2^nd last year. In this year’s tournament they lost against NMMU (0-4) and draw the match against Wits (1-1). They won the matches against KZN (2-0), Rhodes (5-1) and Ikeys (4-1). In the end of the day the draw against Wits was the big difference.

Four players form the Maties Hockey Club are now off to play in the Commonwealth Games for South Africa. They are Pierre de Voux, Illse Davids, Jade Mayne and Quanita Bobbs. The Games is from 23 July to 3 August in Glasgow, Scotland.

In the mean time the Western Province women’s team for IPT was announced. Jade Mayne, Illse Davids, Erin Hunter, Hanli Hattingh, Bronwyn Kretzman, Suleke Brand, Leigh Boardman, Farah Fredericks and Sarah Bingham represent Maties in the WP team.

Nicole Le Fleur, Rezanne Villet, Margaux Reynecke, Rosey Lombard, Kim Rennie, Teagan van der Wath, Taryn Horner and Sabrina Miles will be in action for the WP Peninsula team.

The tournament is in Pietermaritzburg from 18 to 24 August.

It was a sombre start to the USSA tournament for the Steinhoff Maties Hockey as they observed a minute silence for Prof Russel Botman who passed away.

The match itself ended with Steinhoff Maties winning 3-0 over the Madibaz.

Then it was the turn of the men to also play against NMMU.  Unfortunately the men lost 4-0 .

For Day 2, the men play against UKZN at 11:30 and thereafter ladies will take on Pukke at 13:00

Congratulations to the Steinhoff Matie ladies who were selected to represent the WP and Peninsula teams at the Senior IPT.
