Last year the Steinhoff Maties women’s team won the inaugural Varsity Hockey tournament. This year the tournament will have eight men’s university teams competing for the honours of Varsity Hockey Champions.
The participating universities are Steinhoff Maties, NMMU, UCT, Rhodes, Kovsies, Tuks, UJ and Wits.
The tournament starts on 3 May and the finals will be played on Monday 19 May. The first weekend’s action will happen at Wits, the second weekend at Coetzenburg and Kovsies and the finals weekend will be at UJ.
The Maties men will be keen to follow in the footsteps of their female counterparts.
Maties schedule: 3 May: Wits vs Maties; 4 May: Tuks vs Maties; 5 May: Kovsies vs Maties; 10 May: Maties vs Ikesy; 11 May: Maties vs NMMU; 12 May: Maties vs UJ; 17 May: Maties vs Rhodes.
