It was a winning weekend for the Steinhoff Maties Hockey Club in the Western Province Grand Challenge with three victories from three matches for the first teams.
The Maties Men played on Saturday and Sunday. The first match was against Somerset West and after leading 4-0 at halftime the team closed it out 7-0. Daniel Bell and Keenan Horne scored twice, while Pierre de Voux, Dave Agar and James Drummond also found the back of the net.
Sunday’s match was away against Langa and once again the team scored a handful of goals. Striker Shannon Boucher scored his first of the season and his first since his comeback from injury. De Voux, Horne, Drummond and Rob Edwards also made the scoreboard tick.
Maties’ next game is against Fish Hoek this Sunday.
The Maties Women played the one game on Saturday against Conberg and won 1-0 thanks to a second half goal from striker Tarryn Glasby. It was a frustrating game for Maties. They had most of the possession and more opportunities to score – especially from penalty corners – but could not convert. It must be added that Conberg was dogged on the defence.
Next up for Illse Davids and her team is Sunday’s match versus Central.
- In the mean time several Maties have been called up the training squad for the Junior World Cup next year. Glasby, Gretchin Davids and Alegra Dijkstra are the women that will represent Maties in the training squad. The men are Bili Ntuli, Alex Stewart, Robert McKinley, Jacques Bleekers, Chris Hawkridge, Matt de Sousa and Charlie Bowren.
