Prospective Students

Dear Huis Visser Newcomer

On behalf of the residence, I would like to congratulate you on your acceptance to Huis Visser. It is truly something you can be proud of and be excited for. We look forward to welcoming you into our home and make you feel part of the community that we have built over the years.

Although this new chapter you are about to enter in your life seems daunting, I would like to remind you that we were all once in your shoes and I assure you that we are here to assist with your transition into university life. Therefore, I encourage you to enter our community with enthusiasm, courage, passion, excitement and an open mind and leave your worries and fears at home. We also have a mentor programme in place to help with the transition from High School to Tertiary Education and our seniors are more than willing to assist with any problems.

It is true that we are one of the smaller residences on campus, but this is no cause for concern. This only adds to our stature and contributes greatly to our unmatched culture of brotherhood. We have a strong reputation as tough competitors, priding ourselves in excellence across all areas of residence life, namely: Academics, Sport, Culture and Social.

My advice to you is to be yourself and don’t be scared of the challenges ahead. You will rub shoulders with a diverse group of people, but I can assure you there is a community within ours which will be suitable for you. Furthermore, I advise you to grab this opportunity and make the best of it, you are only a student once in your life and remember to stay true to yourself.

You will quickly realise if given the opportunity Huis Visser can prove that we are not only a place to stay or live in, but we can actually become your home. Therefore, I encourage you to stay as long as possible to fully integrate into our community and experience our community first-hand in order to find your feet. There are friends for life to made here and it is up to you to decide how you’re going to make the best out of this opportunity granted to you.

We are excited to meet you and make you feel right at home. We cannot wait to see how you will contribute to our brotherhood and develop into the person you will one day become.

Our core values are: Respect, Recognition, Care and Unity through Individuality. These are the cornerstone of our behaviour as a residence and individuals. We pride ourselves as being known amongst male communities as competitors and amongst female communities as being outgoing and respectful.

Sport is a crucial part of our residence since every sporting event is an opportunity for us to unite as a residence around a common cause. I am happy to announce that we compete in all the top leagues across campus and fare extremely well in each occasion we participate in. We offer the following sporting codes and many more:

Huis Visser First XV
  • Rugby

  • Tennis
  • Table Tennis
  • Swimming

Fear not – culture is also something we do not shy away from. This is evident by the great support our culture events receive from within the residence. We are especially proud of The Sailors that is considered to be one of the top men’s acapella groups on campus and our Toneelfees productions that have received many awards over the years. We offer the following culture activities
