The footprint of Stellenbosch University (SU) can be found far and wide. In the last few months, representatives from the University travelled the world building new networks and partnerships.

From 28 April to 8 May 2018, for example, a delegation of staff members from SU International visited various faculties in Southeast Asia ˗ Nanyang Technical University in Singapore, the National University of Singapore (Engineering), Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Hong Kong ˗ with the aim of exploring academic collaborations.

Members of the delegation included Prof Nico Gey von Pittius, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Prof Willie Perold, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof Pregala Pillay, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, Prof Resia Pretorius, Chairperson of the Department of Physiological Sciences in the Faculty of Science, Dr Shaheed Tayob, Lecturer in Sociology and Social Anthropology in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and Ms Huba Boshoff, Manager of the Centre for Partnerships and Internationalisation at SU International.

Other visits included the following:

  • Mr Nico Elema, Manager of the Centre for Collaboration in Africa, Prof Sarah Howie, Director of the Africa Centre for Scholarship (ACS), and Ms Karin Wiss, Faculty Manager of Law, visited Strathmore University in Kenya to discuss a bilateral partnership between SU and Strathmore University, focusing on collaboration with the ACS, developing a law student exchange programme and effecting Strathmore as host for SU BCom International Business students.
  • Mr Nico Elema and Ms Norma Derby also met with the European Commission’s EACEA Agency in Brussels, Belgium, to present the Stellenbosch experience and feedback on intra-ACP/Africa mobility programmes.
  • Ms Joanna Fatch, representing the NEPAD SANWATCE Secretariat hosted by SU International’s Centre for Collaboration in Africa, attended the ZAMCOM Water, Energy and Food nexus project partners’ meeting in Harare, Zimbabwe, and the World Water Forum in Brasilia, Brazil, to present a paper on the NEPAD SANWATCE ACEWater2 Human Capacity Development Project.

Also travelling to Brazil, SU International staff members Ms Huba Boshoff, Manager of the Centre for Partnerships and Internationalisation, and Ms Alecia Erasmus, Coordinator of Information Management and Erasmus+, attended the conference of the Association of Brazilian Universities for International Education in Rio de Janeiro from 14 to 18 April. They continued onto the University of São Paulo to explore collaborations in Business, the Arts and Humanities, and AgriSciences.

French business school SKEMA and Stellenbosch University (SU) have joined forces to open a SKEMA campus in Stellenbosch. This will be SKEMA’s seventh campus globally. The partnership, which was officially launched on 31 January 2020, is set to significantly contribute to achieving the objectives of SU’s internationalisation strategy.
