As we kick off another year, the CGA would like to wish all of their clients and collaborators a happy 2018! Last year was a busy one for the CGA, with the successful completion of a number of projects, short courses, research and development. Specific highlights of 2017 include:
- the submission of the final report for WRC project K5/2401//4: Wide-scale modelling of water and water availability with earth observation imagery;
- the completion of the first phase of the Stellenbosch Municipality Land Audit: the creation of a cadastral geodatabase assessing ownership information from multiple sources;
- the hosting of an Introduction to Earth Observation, an Introduction to GEOBIA (which was presented at the CSIR in Pretoria), and two Introduction to GIS Courses, with a total attends of over 60 students;
- the start of a partnership with Trimble, as part of their Trimble Imaging Innovation Program, promoting the use of GEOBIA and eCognition as an image analysis tool;
- the renewal of PCI Strategic Education Alliance agreement with Stellenbosch University, promoting the use of PCI Geomatica as a remote sensing analysis tool;
- the launch of a spin-out company, GeoSmart Space and
- the overhaul and relaunching of the CGA website.
Three qualifications were awarded to CGA staff in 2017, with Naajidah du Plessis obtaining a Postgraduate Diploma in Civil Engineering: Geotechnical Engineering; Jacques Vermeulen obtaining a National Diploma in Cartography and GIS; and Jascha Muller obtaining his MSc in Geoinformatics (cum laude).
