Equipping early career researchers with tools for evaluating ecosystem services which underpin food and water security Workshop

Under the Researcher Links scheme offered within the Newton Fund, the British Council, in partnership with the South African National Research Foundation, we will be holding a three day workshop on the above theme on September 29th-October 1st, 2016 in South Africa. The workshop is being coordinated by University of Gloucestershire, UK; Stellenbosch University, South Africa; and the American University Cairo, Egypt, and will have contributions from other leading researchers. We are now inviting Early Career Researchers from the UK, South Africa and Egypt to apply to attend this workshop. All travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the Newton Researcher Links programme. The application form, with more details on the initiative, is attached and should be sent to klynch@glos.ac.uk before the deadline of 3rd June 2016.  The successful applicants will be notified by the 17th June 2016 and the workshop will take place in Stellenbosch, South Africa on the 29th September to the 1st October 2016.

The Workshop

Ecosystem services underpin food and water security and are essential to people’s livelihoods, especially in Africa. The challenges of evaluating and managing ecosystem services in natural and agricultural systems require interdisciplinary evaluation methods which combine scientific and social science approaches. This workshop provides an opportunity for Early Career Researchers from natural and social sciences to learn about, share and strengthen their competencies in interdisciplinary approaches for evaluating ecosystem services. Specifically the workshop aims to equip early career researchers from South Africa, Egypt and UK with the conceptual and analytical tools for evaluating ecosystem services and for demonstrating their importance when considering development actions.
