Interested in the environment from a young age, Garth undertook a BSc at UCT in 2000, majoring in Ecology, Environmental and Geographical Science and Zoology. After graduation in 2003 he worked a short stint as an intern for an environmental consulting company, finding GIS the most interesting and rewarding part of the job.
In 2006, he enrolled at the Stellenbosch University, completing his BSc Honours in GIS and Environmental Analysis (2006) and MSc in Environmental Management and GIS (2010). He began as a GIS and EO Specialist at the CGA in 2010, and was appointed as General Manager in 2014. His current responsibilities include the strategic planning and management of the CGA; management and oversight of a number of GIS and remote sensing-related projects; research grant and tender applications; research and development of new GIS and EO products; and research, lecturing and training in GIS and EO. Garth has co-authored a number of GIS and EO peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, conference proceedings and research/consultancy reports, and has presented research at several national and international GIS and EO conferences.
