Dr Michael Pretes is a Professor of Geography at the University of North Alabama in the United States. A native of San Francisco, California, he holds a B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley, an M.A. and Graduate Certificate in African Studies from Northwestern University, and a Ph.D. from the Australian National University. He has previously taught at universities in Canada, Finland, Australia, Hawai‘i, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado, and California, and served from 2019-21 as the President of the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers. His research and teaching focus on the economic development of remote regions, tourism, and national parks, with regional foci in Western North America, Australia and the Pacific, Southern Africa, and Polar Regions. He has various research and teaching interests, but his main concern is his knowledge of tourism geographies.
