In the recent Summer Hockey Series held at Hartleyvale, Steinhoff Maties were well represented in the South African women’s team with Illse Davids, Hanli Hattingh, Erin Hunter, Quanita Bobbs and Jade Mayne flying the flag for Stellenbosch.

It was not only an important series of games against Belgium and Chile, but also a grueling series of eight matches back-to-back. According to Davids, who is one of the most experienced players in the SA team, it was a big test for body and mind. South Africa drew both the series against Belgium and Chile. Lots of youngsters and new players were given the opportunity to test themselves on an international stage. It was a good time for lessons to be learnt.

“During the series it taught many of the players to tackle each game with drive and determination. Playing eight games in such a short period of time, is tough both mentally and physically,” said Davids. “Playing so many games means that you need to be physically fit and through this grueling 14 day period. Your mentality gets tested. I learnt that as a player you need to have both of these important qualities to be at the top of your game.”

Sharing the field with her fellow Maties was a nice experience for Davids. “It was great to play with the likes of Quanita Bobby, Erin Hunter and Hanli Hattingh. Not only team-mates at Maties, but great players in general!”

Next up for the SA team is World League 3 in June. “The series was a great way for the new caps to gain experience as well as for our team to compete against good opposition. Belgium has come over the past three years and it was Chile’s first time in Cape Town. We drew both series. Our next tournament is world league 3 in June this year and we are all training hard to make that tournament a success.”

Mens Trials 10 FebThis is the list of players that have been selected to take part in TOMORROW’s trials (Tuesday 10th of February). Please make sure you look for your name and give us any relevant information that has not been previously supplied. To those of you who do not see your names on the list, you will be taking part in Thursday’s trials. The Thursday list will be emailed to you tomorrow. Some email address have not been provided so please let your friends know if you see their name on the list, otherwise they will miss their chance to make a team.

Make sure you are at the Astro by 17:15 at the latest as we need to get the games underway as quickly as possible.​ Good Luck!

Daniel Bell in action against the Dutch.

In net sy tweede internasionale reeks het Steinhoff Maties Hokkie se Daniel Bell gewys hy vasbeslote om ‘n gereelde lid van die Suid-Afrikaanse manshokkiespan te word.

Bell, Dylan Swanepoel, Pierre de Voux, Jacques le Roux, Shannon Boucher, Keenan Horne en Marc Fourie – almal Maties – het vir Suid-Afrika gespeel in die Somer-reeks teen Nederland en Ierland. SA het teen Nederland verloor, gelykop gespeel teen Ierland in die eerste wedstryd en toe die laaste in ‘n riller-stryd met 4-5 verloor.

Vroeër in Januarie het Bell saam met Fourie, Boucher en Horne hul debuut vir Suid-Afrika gemaak in ‘n reeks teen Oostenryk. “Dit is ‘n groot eer om vir my land te speel. Ek sal nooit die eerste keer vergeet toe ons die Volkslied gesing het nie. Terwyl ek daar saam met die ander spelers gestaan het, het ek besef dat ek dit gemaak het. Ek het die hele ervaring van my eerste wedstryd baie geniet. Toe ek die veld verlaat na die wedstryd het ek ‘n groot glimlag op my gesig gehad…Ek het net geweet ek is waar ek wil wees,” het Bell vertel.

Bell was een van die beste spelers op die veld teen Nederland en Ierland. “Ek weet ek moet aanhou hard werk. As jy vir jou land speel, kan jy nooit net gemiddeld wees nie. Ek wil die beste wees. Ek is tevrede met my spel in die reeks, maar daar is altyd plek vir verbetering. Ek beweeg in die regte rigting, maar ek is tot soveel meer in staat.”

Bell het bygevoeg om saam met sy Matie-spanmaats te speel, het die ervaring soveel meer onvergeetlik gemaak. “Om op die veld te stap saam met my mede-Maties was baie spesiaal.”

Suid-Afrika speel volgende in ‘n reeks teen Duitsland.
