A Guide to SAJU 6’s Themes and Parallel Breakout Sessions
Author: Inge Odendaal
The 6th South Africa-Japan University Forum (SAJU 6) is more than a platform to share research – it is a dynamic event where scholars from different fields gather to think and discuss how best to tackle global challenges. This year, the forum focuses on “Fostering Sustainable Partnerships in Research, Innovation, and Impact,” bringing together researchers, students, university administrators, industry stakeholders, and government representatives from both South Africa and Japan.
One key element of the SAJU 6 programme is sharing research through breakout parallel sessions. This year, the parallel sessions take place over three exciting sub-themes: Health and Wellbeing, Social Justice and Development, and Systems and Technologies for the Future.
What to Expect at SAJU 6: Themes and Research Presentations
Each day, in addition to the plenary and networking sessions, participants can split into different groups to attend parallel breakout sessions, which are divided according to the three primary sub-themes.
Health and Wellbeing
The discussions on health and wellbeing will address physical and mental health and their impact on society. The key topics range from public health to the effects of COVID-19 and research into indigenous plants and biodiversity.
Social Justice and Development
This sub-theme will cover discussions on food and water security, climate action, migration, human security, economic growth, and global governance, among other topics. Expert presentations will also address state-building, development policies, security policies, and sustainable development.
Systems and Technologies for the Future
This category encompasses research on artificial intelligence (AI) and information and communications technology (ICT), digitalization, engineering, and sustainable cities. Exciting discussions under this theme will also explore the use of sci-fi and manga to imagine future technologies.
The breakout sessions offer a platform for researchers to share their findings, exchange insights, and discuss best practices and innovative solutions. They also provide an opportunity to explore collaboration by identifying areas for joint projects and research opportunities. This enables researchers from both countries to benefit from each other’s expertise and research contributions, fostering a sense of collective effort and engagement.
