René is a research fellow at the Department of Curriculum Studies and the Centre for Higher and Adult Education, Faculty of Education, Stellenbosch University (SU). She obtained her Hons-BMus Degree (SU) in 1981 and performed several piano concertos with CAPAB Symphony Orchestra during this time. Her choir won a national television competition out of a possible 54 such choirs in 1982. She entered the TVET college sector in 1986 and joined the Northlink College management team in 1998. She holds an MPhil (Life Long Learning) degree with a focus on the gendered experiences of women in leadership positions in the Western Cape TVET sector through a narrative study.
