A password authenticates your network identity and is crucial in keeping your identity and data secure. It expires every 90 days in accordance with the University’s password policy.

Warnings are sent from 14 days before your password expires. A link to the page where you can change your password is included in emails.

Passwords can also be reset or changed at www.sun.ac.za/password.

To reset your password, you'll have to provide one of the following:
- your cellphone number or
- an external email address

To use the password selfhelp function your information on HR has to be up to date. This can be done on http://my.sun.ac.za, My profile and Personal Information.





  • You cannot re-use your previous 10 passwords.
  • Your username, name or last name may not form part of the password.
  • It must consist of 8 or more characters, but no longer than 32 alpha numeric characters.
  • It must contain at least 3 of the following 4 groups of characters: Alphabetic (small caps), Alphabetic (capital letters), numerical or special characters, for example  %,$,#.​
  • New passwords can contain spaces, but not at the end of the password.
