The CGA, together with Stellenbosch University, offers short courses in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Earth Observation (EO). The courses, which are part-time, online and accredited by Stellenbosch University, provide applicants with the skills to make their own maps, to acquire, capture, edit and manipulate spatial data and to run a variety of GIS analyses.

Introduction to Geographical Information Systems is a short course aimed at beginners who require instruction in the basic theoretical and practical functionality of GIS. This includes an overview of the nature of geographical data, GIS processes (such as capturing, storing, editing, manipulation and analysis) applied to spatial data, map projection and production, as well as spatial analysis and modelling.

Our other short course, Introduction to Earth Observation, is aimed at beginners who need instruction in the basic principles and techniques fundamental to remote sensing. Our third course, Advanced Earth Observation, takes what students have learned in the Introduction to EO short course to the next level.

The courses are completed online, with students having the option of signing up for a fully accredited (R8000) or attendance only (R6000) format. This year, the courses will be running in parallel from 20 May – 12 July, and 29 July – 20 September. Read more about these courses on our website, or contact cga@sun.ac.za to apply today.
