Prof Zoltan SzantoiResearch Fellow
Zoltan is currently a scientific and technical officer at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, and a research fellow at Stellenbosch University’s Department of Geography & Environmental Studies. He received his Ph.D. degree in Geomatics from the University of Florida (USA). His doctoral research was to develop a methodology for efficient and high accuracy mapping of graminoid communities in a wetland environment. He has experience in geospatial big data processing, advance image classification techniques, image texture analysis and land cover mapping and monitoring. In his research, he investigates environmental issues important to society, by employing state-of-the-art machine learning approaches in geospatial applications and in environmental and land change sciences. He has published over fifty peer-reviewed scientific articles in journals and proceedings such as Earth System Science Data, Nature Plants, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Environmental Science and Policy, and Remote Sensing of Environment. He serves as an Editorial Board member for the European Journal of Remote Sensing and a reviewer of over 20 scientific journals. He enjoys supervising graduate students.
