The principal goal of Stellenbosch University Japan Centre (SUJC) is to promote Japanese and Japan Studies at the university through research, teaching and other academic collaboration with partners in Japan, elsewhere on the African continent, and internationally. The centre also aims to enhance knowledge and cultural exchange on a broader basis by means of public symposia and culture-based events. Overall, through its work, the centre seeks to contribute to Stellenbosch University’s vision of advancing research excellence and knowledge of greater social benefit.
ステレンボッシュ大学日本センター(SUJC)の主な目的は、日本、アフリカ大陸、そして国際的なパートナーとの研究、教育、その他の学術協力を通し大学における日本研究、日本学を推進することです。当センターはまた、公開シンポジウムや文化的イベントを通じて、より広範な知識・文化交流の強化も目指しています。概して、当センターはその活動を通し、優れた研究とより大きな社会的利益をもたらす知識を推進するというステレンボッシュ大学のビジョンに貢献することを目指しています。
From its first year of activities, a number of milestones can be highlighted. In April, SUJC started an internship programme, the Japan-Africa Young Scholars Initiative, which has as aim the strengthening of research skills and capacity on Japan-related topics through mentorship and training. The programme’s first cohort come from a variety of academic fields and they have contributed substantively to the centre’s research output this year. As SUJC director, I was part of a delegation of around 30 academic managers, researchers and government officials from six African countries on a science and technology exchange visit to Japan on invitation by the Japan Science and Technology Agency. Furthermore, SUJC co-organised a symposium on research collaboration between Japan and South Africa in conjunction with the Japan International Cooperation Agency, Japan Science and Technology Agency, and South Africa’s ministry of Science and Innovation and the National Research Foundation.
初年度の活動から、いくつかのマイルストーンを挙げることができます。4月、SUJCはインターンシップ・プログラム「日本アフリカ若手研究者イニシアティブ」を開始しました。このプログラムの目的は、指導およびトレーニングを通じ、日本に関するテーマの研究スキルと知的能力を強化することです。このプログラムの第一期生は様々な学問分野から集まっており、今年のセンターの研究成果に大きく貢献しています。私はSUJCのセンター長として、科学技術振興機構の招待で日本を訪れたアフリカ6カ国の学術管理者、研究者、政府関係者ら約30人からなる科学技術交流訪問団の一員となりました。さらにSUJCは、国際協力機構、科学技術振興機構、南アフリカ科学イノベーション省および国立研究財団と共同で、日本と南アフリカの研究協力に関するシンポジウムを開催しました。
The year has also seen good momentum in the mobility and exchange partnerships that Stellenbosch University (SU) has with Japanese counterparts. Under current mobility programmes with Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Waseda University and Sophia University, there was a steady flow of exchange students. SU’s collaboration with Hiroshima University through joint membership of the International Network of Universities (INU) was further strengthened. This year Hiroshima was host to the INU Leader’s Summit. Stellenbosch University assumed the presidency of the INU for the 2023-25 term, with Professor Hester Klopper, SU’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Strategy, Global, and Corporate Affairs, serving as acting president. SUJC members also participated in a seminar on global citizenship and peace held as part of the INU proceedings.
また今年は、ステレンボッシュ大学（SU）が日本の大学と締結しているモビリティや交流パートナーシップにも良い弾みが見られました。東京外国語大学、早稲田大学、上智大学との現モビリティ・プログラムで交換留学生が着実に増えています。国際大学ネットワーク（INU）への共同加盟を通じた広島大学との連携もさらに強化されました。今年は広島でINUリーダーズサミットが開催されました。ステレンボッシュ大学は2023-25年度のINU会長に就任し、SUの戦略・グローバル・広報副学長であるヘスター・クロッパー教授が会長代行を務めました。SUJCのメンバーも、INUの議事進行の一環として開催された地球的市民と平和に関するセミナーに参加しました。
As part of its public engagement, a number of lectures and symposia were organised by the centre. Of note is the inaugural Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Chair lecture held in Stellenbosch in October, presented by former JICA president and erstwhile ambassador to the United Nations, Dr. Shinichi Kitaoka. The JICA Chair initiative is Dr. Kitaoka’s brainchild. It is a seminar programme on Japan’s modernisation and development cooperation offered at select universities across the globe. October’s JICA Chair lecture was the first to be held in South Africa.
公共活動の一環として当センターは数多くの講演会やシンポジウムを開催しました。特筆すべきは、10月にステレンボッシュで開催された元JICA理事長で元国連次席大使の北岡伸一博士による初めての国際協力機構（JICA）チェア講演会です。日本研究講座- JICAチェア構想は北岡博士の発案によるものです。これは日本の近代化と開発協力に関するセミナープログラムで、世界各地の選ばれた大学で開催されており、10月のJICAチェア講座は南アフリカで初めて開催されたものとなりました。
SUJC also introduced SU’s first-ever Japanese language course to the campus community. The pilot course, pitched at the beginner’s level, is to be followed up with others over the coming year and beyond. The 6th South Africa-Japan Universities (SAJU) Forum is also to be held next year.
SUJCはまた、キャンパス・コミュニティにSU初の日本語コースを導入しました。このパイロットコースは初級レベルで来年以降も継続的に開催される予定です。第6回南アフリカ日本大学（SAJU）フォーラムも来年開催されます。
Collaboration with institutional and academic partners is integral to SUJC’s activities. As the current academic year concludes we look forward to further engagement and collaboration ahead.
SUJCの活動には、大学や研究機関のパートナーとの協力が欠かせません。今年度も終了し、今後のさらなる関与と協力を期待します。
