Cycling for a Cause

When asked about their motivation for taking on the London-to-Brighton Cycle Ride to raise funds for SU students, Mariaan said: “My degree has opened so many doors over the years. I have had the opportunity to meet interesting people who are experts in their fields and even had opportunities to work on projects that allowed me to travel to various countries. This would not have been possible without a degree from Stellenbosch University.”

Lani's deep connection to her alma mater and her desire to pay it forward fuel her commitment to the cause. As an avid cyclist, she believes that her passions align with this great cause.

"I am a cyclist and a weekend warrior. I even cycle to work,” she proudly said. “This [raising funds through the SWAN initiative] is my opportunity to give back to Stellenbosch University because they really helped me and supported me on my journey. When the opportunity came up to cycle and raise funds for students, I was definitely keen."

Empathy

The trio understand the financial challenges that students face. Having walked the same path not too long ago.

Lani recalled: "I did not know anyone, you have this impostor syndrome, and I became acutely aware of how much this [studies and staying in Stellenbosch] is costing. My dad was adamant that I understand the full financial implications of my studies. I went to the bank asking for the loan, I remember this guy referring to prima plus and I had no idea what he was talking about. I always worked as a student, bartending, waitressing, and as an assistant in the [academic] department."

Mariaan’s cycling story reads a bit differently. She went on to say that she could not believe that she actually could complete the full ride. Not only did she make it this year, but this was her second time completing the trip. Her empathy for her fellow Matie students trumps her feeling parched or even flustered as she pedals through the route, kilometre after kilometre.

These three were also involved in raising funds for sanitary pad vending machines that we recently installed on the Stellenbosch and Tygerberg campuses, and initiatives like the London-to-Brighton Cycle Ride helps with stocking and re-stocking these machines.

"This year was the second year that we cycled from London to Brighton. As a novice cyclist, I did not think I would even be able to do it once… nevermind twice! I am out of my comfort zone when I am cycling around the streets of the UK, but being uncomfortable is nothing compared to the worry of not knowing if you would be able to pay your tuition debt. The #BridgeTheGap initiative supports those students in need, and you know 'once a Matie, always a Matie' – and how can we call ourselves Maties if we don't look out for one another?"

Pledging for the Future

Beyond the London to Brighton Cycle Ride, Lani, Mariaan, and Tania have ambitious plans to continue supporting SU students. While specifics are yet to be unveiled, their dedication is unwavering. They are exploring various avenues to address student support, with the aim of creating lasting, positive change for the SU community.

Team Captain, Lani said the initiative to raise funds through the cycle ride is not exclusive to SWAN members. She encourages all SU alumni, both male and female, to get involved. The three are hoping to inspire fellow alumni to be part of a brighter future for SU students. They believe in the profound impact that individuals can make when they come together with a shared vision of empowerment and support.
