One such donor is the PA & Alize Malan Memorial Trust. The Law Clinic manager, Professor Theo Broodryk, emphasises the important work the Clinic does for communities across the Helderberg, Drakenstein, and Cape Winelands regions.

"The Law Clinic received funding from the PA & Alize Malan Memorial Trust for the first time in 2023. This funding was strategically allocated to various projects to advance legal awareness and allow access to justice across South Africa," Broodryk says.

The funding received from the PA & Alize Malan Memorial Trust enables the Law Clinic to:

  • inform and empower qualifying persons through fair and equal access to quality and cost-effective legal services and support
  • inform and empower the appropriate persons through the dissemination and provision of relevant, quality legal information and training
  • sustain the Clinic’s existence and its ability to offer relevant, cost-effective services

The Constitutional Rights Training Project initiative is made possible in part through the backing of the PA & Alize Malan Memorial Trust. Over the past six years, the Law Clinic has reached more than 470 participants across South Africa.

Last year 404 participants attended from 30 October to 3 November as this project expanded its reach beyond the borders of the country, collaborating with Strathmore University’s Law Clinic to conduct rights empowerment sessions in Kenya. These sessions, held in strategic locations such as Lasuuk, Maralal, and Twala, aimed to empower rural and marginalised communities by enhancing their understanding of constitutional rights.

"Another impactful endeavour facilitated with the PA & Alize Malan Memorial Trust’s funding is the Wills Week on Wheels project," says Broodryk. "This project entails the Clinic’s assisting qualifying members of the public with the drafting of their wills throughout the year, by going into numerous communities and providing free assistance in those communities to individuals who need it most."

In 2023, the Clinic conducted a successful Wills Week in the Paarl and Strand communities over four days, drafting wills for several qualifying individuals. The empowerment of the SU Law Clinic accordingly offers real-world solutions for real-world challenges.

Broodryk emphasised the importance and pivotal role donors such as the PA & Alize Malan Memorial Trust play in keeping the Clinic’s work relevant and impactful to those in marginalised and vulnerable circumstances.

"The funding enables the SU Law Clinic to inform, empower, and equip qualifying persons through fair and equal access to quality and cost-effective legal services. Additionally, it supports the dissemination of relevant legal information and helps sustain the Clinic’s existence, ensuring its continued ability to offer, in particular, essential services to vulnerable communities."
