Digital Donor Newsletter | Autumn 2024

The #Move4Food initiative was launched in August 2018 with the goal of raising funds to help sustain food security initiatives at SU. The initiative forms part of the University's Bridge the Gap Annual Fund.

This year, a record number of 70 cyclists, led by SU Rector and Vice-chancellor Prof Wim de Villiers, put up their hand to move for Maties during the CTCT on Sunday 10 March.

For Efrayim, a Grade 8 learner of Boland Agricultural High School (Hoër Landbouskool Boland) in Paarl, it was the furthest he has ever cycled. He only took up road cycling last year, and he was encouraged by his coach and fellow #Move4Food cyclist Francois Bothma to participate in this initiative.

"I didn’t know what to expect on the day, but I wasn’t afraid – I was actually very excited," he says.

He completed the race in an inspiring time of 4:46, raising R4 250 for the initiative.

Participating in the event was a 2-for-1 deal for him.

"I competed in the race, and I raised funds for charity. I love Stellenbosch University and would like to study there one day, if possible. I don’t know what I would like to do yet, but I know that I want to make a difference."

It makes Efrayim sad that people, and especially students, are going hungry.

"I would rather help now, because I don’t think I would like to be in such a situation. I’m grateful that I can be part of the solution."

His friends and family are very proud of him.

"Some of them, like my coach Oom Francois Bothma and Oom Sean Fatboy, were also part of the race and they supported me all the way."

He would like to complete the race again, but with more training and in a faster time. He also wants to encourage everyone to become involved in initiatives to help others.

"If we all help, the world will be a better place."

According to Efrayim’s mom Salome, he is being brought up to stand up for what he believes in.

"We are very proud of him, both for the effort he put in to raise the funds and complete the race, and for living what he beliefs. Every small effort helps."

When he’s not cycling, Efrayim likes to play rugby and video games. His favourite meal is his granny’s cottage pie.

Thanks to our cyclists' efforts, R122 995 was raised to fight hunger through #Move4food. You can help us keep the momentum going by donating or joining our next event. Donations are still welcome and warmly received.
