Capstone assignment title:
Limitations of the recruitment methods for doctoral students and supervisors: Which good practices for Burkina Faso universities?
Capstone assignment abstract:

Summary A Ph.D. is a journey completed by the doctorate candidate under a supervisor guidance. This research can be in co-supervisory with professors from other universities. The managers are different and the students are also involved in the management. Doctoral candidates’ recruitment is in accordance with the rules of the doctoral school and the universities governance. The main entrance degree is the master or the DEA as equivalent degree. A doctoral committee is set up in which the supervisors are nominated according to their experience. They have to work with liability in a professional courtesy and fairness with the student and also the co-supervisors. A memorandum of research conduction is used as the management rules showing responsibility of student and supervisors in the success of a proposal. To be successful in graduation, work conditions should be guaranteed by the head of department of the universities, the doctoral schools and supervisors. Then the students must do their best to succeed. A conflict can born between the supervisor and the student or within the supervisors. In general theses disagreements are solved using the rules set up by the Ph.D. committee, the doctoral school and the universities. In Burkina Faso, it is quite different. The head of doctoral programme organise the doctoral candidates’ recruitment. The head of doctoral school ensures that supervisors have the required support and resources to undertake a supervisory. A conflict case raised up between supervisors in a Burkinabe doctoral school showed that it really takes a long time to be solved. As the conflict was lasting the Head of university set up a new doctoral committee in order to allow the student’s thesis presentation. Drawing lessons from this case proves that it’s quite necessary to study closely doctoral school management and doctoral research proposals.
