Capstone assignment title:
Flip side of External Examination and Prospect of Establishing Uniformity in Doctoral Programmes across higher Institutions in the African Continent
Capstone assignment abstract:

Doctoral Education in Africa is modeled after those from European and/or (North) America Universities in content, supervision and examination. The programmes are designed directly after or are hybrids of the following five models. These are the traditional PhD model (introduced from European Universities); PhD by publication (reputed to have originated from the United Kingdom in mid- 1960s); taught doctorate otherwise called New Route PhD (a variant that originated from North America, adopted in parts of UK in 2001); professional and work-based doctorate; and practice-based doctorate. Variations and differences have arisen from this arrangement, creating difficulties in partnership and collaboration among institutions of higher learning in Africa. It has also affected the contribution and visibility of African based researchers in the academia. This paper presents an overview of doctoral curricula, supervision and examination models and suggests the development and use of models designed with the African context in mind to enhance collaboration and rapid development in our doctoral studies. The argument is based on reviews drawn from available literature and study materials of Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology (CREST) Online Training Course for Supervisors of Doctoral Candidates at African Universities (special offering for supervisors of DAAD scholarship holders) 2021. The paper recommends commonality in structure without compromise in uniqueness, specialization and peculiarity among African universities.
