Capstone assignment title:
Developing ethical research behaviour in PhD students
Capstone assignment abstract:

Scientific research is the cornerstone of society. Investments in the form of money and time are devoted to the generation and dissemination of knowledge annually. Due to the benefits to society such as new technologies, improvement in the quality of life, and economic growth, the honesty of research is therefore paramount. The honesty of research is however dependent on the researcher’s adherence to ethical research practices and when researchers stray from ethical research practices, the integrity of knowledge is damaged (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2017). Researchers, therefore, need to confront the ethical issues that are inherent to the research process skillfully (Brinkmann & Kvale, 2005). As cases of unethical research practices continue to emerge, the need to develop and preserve ethical research behavior is reinforced. Due to the contribution that Ph.D. students make to the knowledge base, their ethical research behavior needs to be developed. In this assignment, I will focus on developing ethical research behavior in Ph.D. students and reflect on the importance of ethics and make recommendations for how ethical behavior can be developed during the supervision process and whose responsibility it is.
