The first Workshop on Academic Science in South Africa was held at Morgenhof in Stellenbosch between 7 and 8 April 2016. The workshop was jointly hosted by the Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology (CREST) and the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS). The workshop was the brainchild of Prof. Robin Cowan (Professor of Economics, Maastricht University and University of Strasbourg) and Prof. Johann Mouton (Director of CREST). It brought together a select group of experts from Europe and South Africa on the dynamics of academic science in Africa generally, and South Africa specifically. In true academic fashion the workshop stimulated heated, but thought-provoking debate, laying the groundwork for further international cooperation on the topics discussed.
