At this year’s International Conference on Scientometrics and Informetrics (ISSI 2021), Heidi Prozesky, an associate professor at CREST, presented a paper titled “Five decades of empirical on the postdoc: a scoping review of the contribution of bibliometrics”.
The paper was selected by the Programme Committee as one of six “Premium Talks” that were not pre-recorded, but presented live at this virtual event on 15 July 2021.
Her scoping review shows that, from 1970 to 2020, bibliometrics contributed mostly to evaluation studies of postdoc interventions. However, the bibliometrically produced evidence is so limited, compared to that produced by other designs (especially surveys), that its systematic review is not yet feasible. Future bibliometric research on postdocs should also address current field and country biases, by focusing more on the social sciences and humanities, and countries outside of North America and Europe.
