On 8 to 13 November 2022, SciSTIP hosted an intensive training course in patent analysis using the PATSTAT software. The aim of this workshop is to establish an indigenous capability to generate patent information and indicators to the South African STI system. The workshop was facilitated by Dr Jos Winnink from CWTS, Leiden, and covered a range of topics including understanding the basic concepts of intellectual property, the patent system and different data sources, and generating a range of patent indicators. The training was well attended by CREST staff and research fellows, as well as representatives from the National Research Foundation (NRF), National Advisory Council on Innovation (NACI), National Intellectual Property Management Office (NIPMO), Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), and Innovus and the Research Office at Stellenbosch University
