Are you interested in a research opportunity on leadership in public engagement with science? We are seeking a PhD student and a postdoctoral fellow to join the German-South African Public Engagement Exchange (PEX). This three-year partnership between Germany and South Africa will advance skills, capacity and leadership in public engagement with science. Funding of close to 1 million euros from the German Ministry of Science and Education (BMBF) will support the participation of 40 fellows over the next three years and will provide funding for the PhD and postdoctoral roles.
The research opportunity
Two researchers (a PhD student and a postdoctoral fellow) will be appointed at Stellenbosch University to lead the project’s research component. They will be hosted at the Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology (CREST) at Stellenbosch University for three years (2025 to 2027).
The research will focus on questions and issues related to the effectiveness and impacts associated with researchers’ participation in public engagement with science. We aim to generate knowledge on the practice, scope, and potential of internationally collaborative training and engagement methodologies, with a particular focus on the potential of bilateral research partnerships and how their societal impact can be supported. There will also be insights into the impact of design thinking techniques in overcoming barriers and advancing the practice of public engagement in an international context.
Eligibility for these roles
To qualify for the PhD position, applicants must have a master’s degree, preferably in science communication or public engagement with science, or a related field of research such as communication or media studies. For the postdoctoral fellowship, applicants need to have a PhD in one of these fields awarded within the last five years. For both roles, some work experience in public engagement with science and expertise in teaching and capacity building in these fields will be an advantage.
