The paper shows that bibliometrics can be applied as a useful tool to track and identify the mobility of scholars across continents, countries, regions and institutes. The paper elaborates on the impact of highly mobile scholars, but also find that scholarly mobility is a complicated phenomenon, and increasingly threatened. The authors conclude that freedom of movement for scientists is important, and that any political or other barriers that limit scholarly mobility could damage the global science system.
