Robert Tijssen, professor at CREST and Chair of Science and Innovation Studies at Leiden University (an institutional partner of SciSTIP), works on a PhD student Michael van der Merwe (first author) and his supervisors and co-authors, Prof Sara (Saartjie) Grobbelaar (SciSTIP research fellow), Prof Corne Schutte and Konrad von Leipzig (all affiliated with the Department of Industrial Engineering at Stellenbosch University) recently won the award for best paper at the prestigious 2017 Conference of the International Association for Management of Technology, held in May in Vienna, Austria. The paper presents Van der Merwe’s PhD research involving the development of a framework to guide SME owners and managers, who are operating in the “base of the pyramid”, towards attaining sustained profitable growth.
