Dr Rodrigo Costas, researcher at CWTS at Leiden University, recently visited CREST where he delivered a seminar on the h-index and related bibliometric challenges.
The seminar, entitled “How to assess scientists? Discussions around the h-index and individual-level bibliometrics” and highlighted the problems in using the h-index as a single indicator to measure the performance of researchers. Dr Costas also spoke about the practical and conceptual problems of individual-level bibliometrics in general and concluded with a proposal of developing guidelines on when and how indicators should be used at the individual level.
Present in the audience were a range of academics across a number of scientific fields, as well as Dr Thomas Auf der Heyde, deputy director-general of the Department of Science and Technology.
