New socio-economic realities and the fast-changing communication landscape globally demand new ways of thinking about institutional science communication. Alexander Gerber, professor of science and innovation communication at Rhine-Waal University in Germany, visited CREST on 19 February 2016 to present a seminar around this topic. He challenged participants – 25 science communication professionals from the region – to think beyond media relations and become more innovative in their science communication practice. Pointing out that media relations only make up a fraction of their responsibilities, he explained how science communication professionals could benefit from innovative use of new media tools and taking note of advertising tactics to gain public interest and attention.
