Professor Jan Botha is professor in the Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology (CREST) at the University of Stellenbosch. He is the immediate past president and current vice-president of the Southern African Association for Institutional Research (SAAIR). Until July 2014 he was Senior Director for Institutional Research and Planning at the University of Stellenbosch and responsible for academic planning, enrollment planning, quality assurance, management information, Higher Education policy analysis and liaison with national Higher Education authorities. He (co)-authored more than 40 institutional policies. Under his supervision at institutional level 163 new academic programmes and 65 research centers and institutes were launched and 90 academic departments and 21 support service units were evaluated. He has served on national Higher Education policy-making task teams (e.g. the development of a national policy on joint PhD and Masters degrees with international universities, and the development of the HEQC’s national programme accreditation framework and criteria). He regularly presents workshops on doctoral supervision, on higher education policy and management and QA, and he has presented numerous papers and keynote speeches at national and international professional and scholarly conferences. He is the author of two scholarly books, 29 articles in academic journals and 17 chapters in scholarly books and has supervised five PhD and ten Masters students.
His research interests include Higher Education policy and planning in South Africa, the positioning of universities, academic organization, postgraduate supervision, and the theory and practice of Institutional Research.
