20 March 2024

The 2024 ‘Communicating Discovery Science’ symposium will be hosted in South Africa from 18 to 20 November 2024. The event is organised and hosted by CREST and made possible by support from the Kavli Foundation. It builds on earlier work of the ‘Science Public Engagement Partnership (SciPEP) project, an initiative of The Kavli Foundation and the United States Department of Energy.

The Symposium aims to deepen understanding of effective public engagement around discovery science. What values and principles should underpin communication and engagement of basic sciences? What place is there for using emotional connections such as wonder, curiosity and joy to engage people with discovery science? What is needed in research environments to encourage and support scientists to engage with public and policy audiences? How can storytelling, art, theatre and other ways of working across disciplines be used to engage with basic sciences? These are just some of the topics of interest that will be explored over three days in various presentation formats under the overarching theme of Communicating Discovery Science.

The Call for Proposals is open until 31 May 2024, and submissions will be reviewed by an international Scientific Advisory Committee, which will lead the programme development. The programme will be announced on 30 August 2024.
