Encouraging African Universities to Utilize €150bn EU Investment

Peter Maassen, professor in higher education studies at the University of Oslo, has encouraged African universities to capitalise on a €150bn investment from the European Union (EU). Speaking at a seminar in South Africa, Maassen highlighted the role of African universities in promoting sustainable investment and collaboration with European institutions. He added that the two unions’ strategic partnership agreement paved the way for a new era of multilateral university collaboration and equitable partnerships, which would focus on cluster development for research and innovation capacity. Four key areas for collaboration have been identified: public health; green transition; innovation and technology; and capacities for science.
