On August 3, 2023, Prof. Johann Mouton, director of SciSTIP, presented an online brown bag session to the University Capacity Development Programme staff at the 26 public universities. According to Prof. Mouton, it is obvious that South African academics and researchers want to publish in the best, most reputable and appropriate journals in their disciplines. However, this is not always feasible as the best journals in a particular discipline often have the longest publishing lag times and the highest rejection rates. The rise of predatory journals has made choosing the most appropriate journal to publish in more difficult. The challenge is how to tell the difference between a genuine, (and hopefully) excellent journal versus a possibly predatory journal.
